Global Rules

Global Rules

Global Rules are ones that don't fit into the confines of a whole Section of Instruction.

In this page, we'll look at how to set up Global Rules that don't fit the 'pick X number from this list' style.

We recommend use of Global Rules as a last resort after all other selection control methods have been exhausted.

When to use a Global Rule

If your process involves students being given an instruction, then told to pick a number of Selections from directly beneath it, then you don't need a Global Rule.

However, if you're trying to account for a minimum and/or maximum number of selections as a secondary to other selection criteria, you may need a to set up a Global Rule.

Examples of appropriate reasons to set up Global Rules may include:

  • List B required (a selection from within a set group of subjects, STEM for example) where you have a Learning Area or Line-based selection process.

  • Arts/Technology/Physical elective requirement, where you have a Line-based selection process.

  • A required number of ATAR/General level courses, where you have a Learning Area or Line-based selection process.

How to set up a Global Rule

Go to: Checklist > Year X > Selection Process > Global Rules

Either choose to Add New, or Edit/View an existing rule.

Now you need to set the parameters of the rule.

The text field for the name is for your reference. It won't be visible when students are making selections.

The description will be visible in two circumstances:

  1. If the student hasn't met a 'minimum' requirement, it will appear as a yellow ribbon at the bottom of the page, until the student is compliant.

  2. If the student can't choose it because they have already reached a 'maximum' limit, it will appear if the student hovers over greyed out selection marker.

Only allow any code in this Global Rule to be selected once

The other parameter is 'Only allow any code in this Global Rule to be selected once.' This means that if you have a course code for a Selection more than once in the Global Rule, it will only accept one of them to be included.

Consider English, for example. You may only want it to be selected once.

  • If English has the same course code from the instances that you have included in the Global Rule, ticking this checkbox means that it will be available to selected once. After that, the other instances with the same course code will not be available.

  • If there are different levels of English with different codes, ticking this box will only stop the ones with the same course codes from being chosen together. If the goal is to have only one English chosen, you should have a Global Rule that has a minimum 1 and maximum 1 selection, with all English courses included.

Finally, you need to choose which Selections count toward the Global Rule. If this is a new Rule, the selection process will be contracted, and you will only see the Sections.

Expand out to see the Instructions and the Selections, by clicking the dropdown arrows on the right. Note that only Sections and Instructions that have Selections within them will appear.

If you have multiple pathways where the same Global Rule applies, you can incorporate them into the one rule. Just expand all the lines and tick those selections.

Remember to click the Save button at the bottom right of the page when you’re finished.
